Setting Up a Youth Soccer Practice
One of my favorite quotes to remember when working with Georgia Youth Soccer players is one that was inspired by Confucius:
“What I hear I forget,
What I hear and see I remember a little;
What I hear, see, and ask questions about or discuss I begin to understand;
What I hear, see, discuss and do, I acquire knowledge and the skill;
What I teach another, I master.”
When setting up a practice for youth soccer players, it is important to keep it simple and player centered. It is important to give your youth soccer players plenty of opportunities to have the ball at their feet. Also, give them plenty of situations where the player must problem solve as well as providing plenty of opportunities to score goals.
Keep the play fun, engaging and positive. The more opportunities a player has to experience with the ball in creative situations that involve going to goal, the better it will be for that player.
When setting up your practice, ask yourself these questions as outlined in the US Soccer “Best Practices For Coaches”:
1. Do your Georgia Youth Soccer players have repeated opportunities with the ball as their feet!
2. Do you Georgia Youth Soccer have repeated chances to score goals?
3. Are your Georgia Youth Soccer challenged to dribble the ball and score in soccer situations? (does the exercise include defense, pressure, space, etc..)
4. Are your players having fun?
5. How many players are involved? (keep the exercises small sided 2v2, 3v3, 4v4)
Remember to keep it simple and focus on no more than 3 exercises and use a warmup that involves the players moving the ball in creative ways and developing touch. After your warmup, move into your exercises and then end with a small sided game. Be sure to emphasize creative play during the game phase and encourage players to find creative ways to solve problems as well as challenging them to apply the points you covered in your exercises.
